Temples of Kanchipuram

Undoubtedly, putting Kanchipuram on the International tourists’ map is its temples. During the reign of Pallava dynasty, from the 4th to the 9th centuries, Kanchipuram attained its limelight as the capital city, and many of the known temples were built during their reign. Kanchipuram is one of the seven most sacred pilgrim centres (Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya, Kasi, Kanchi, Avantika, Dwaraka )for the Hindus. There are a large number of temples dedicated to Lord Siva and Lord Vishnu, in addition to the Goddess Kamakshi Temple and the Sri Kanchi Mutt, established by Sri Adi Sankaracharya himself. The temples are steeped in South Indian culture and architecture, and have won acclaim for their great edifices and exquisite architectural beauty.

Temple festivals are held throughout the year and apart from the temple car (ratha) festivals which are held in January, April and May, there are other days when the idols in the temples are taken out in procession on their respective vahanas or vehicles.
