International Workshop on Open Educational Resources March 28th 2017
The Department of Computer Science and Applications conducted a International Workshop on Open Educational Resources on March 28th 2017. Staffs and Students from our department and other departments took part in the Workshop.
March 28th, 2017 (Tuesday) was started with Prayer. A warm welcome address was given by Prof.Dr.S.Rajalakshmi, Professor and Head, Department of CSA was the convener. Dr.N.R.Ananthanarayanan, Associate Professor, Department of CSA is the coordinator of the session.
Session-1 was handled by the research scholar Mrs.Sushumna Rao, Department of CSA, gave a brief introduction about Open Educational Resources(OER) which is coordinated by Open Education Consortium an association of hundreds of institutions and organizations around the world that are committed to the ideals of open education. She highlighted on OER which are freely available educational resources to reuse with an open license. Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials which are freely be used and reuse at no cost, and without needing to ask permission. Unlike copyrighted resources, OER have been authored or created by an individual or organization that chooses to retain few, if any, ownership rights. – OER Commons.
Session-2 Dr. Ramesh C Sharma University Malaysia addressed on the topic and gave valuable information on OERs and their usage globally. Apart from how to create OERs, he also made us understand various Creative Commons license types and how to use them accordingly. He also narrated about the history and developments of Open Educational Resources(OER) which was started in the year 2001. In 2001 Larry Lessig and others founded the Creative Commons and released a flexible set of licenses that were both a vast improvement on the Open Publication Licenses™ confusing license option structure and significantly stronger legal documents. In 2001 MIT announced its OpenCourseWare initiative. Open Content / Open educational resources (OER) / Open Courseware are educational materials which are discoverable online and openly licensed that can be redistribute, shared freely, adapt / repurpose / improve and used by academicians, educationalists around the world.
He also highlighted on the definitions of OER teaching, learning and research materials in any medium, digital or otherwise, that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions. He gave a good thought on the Types of Educational Resources and also to find and search the course related to OER materials. At the end of the session he described on exploring personal learning tools such as Openoffice, Freelish and Wordpress. He gave a brief note about india’s development in Open Educational Resources since there is a national repository on OER such as Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay,Open Educational Resources for Schools, National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning and National Institute of Open Schooling.
This was followed by a feedback session in which participants gave feedback on the workshop. Dr.N.R.Ananthanarayanan, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Applications (CSA) gave vote of thanks. The programme concluded with National Anthem.
